DESCRIPTION:Oscar Nominated Documentary Shorts 2018\nWest Mall 7 Theatres – Doors Open 6:00pm – Film Begins 6:30pm (ends 9:30pm)  \nThis event is included in the Spring 2018 season pass. \nCinema Falls pioneered the effort to bring the Oscar Nominated Shorts program to South Dakota eight years ago. This year\, more than 500 screens across North America\, Europe\, Latin America\, South Africa and Australia will participate. The five nominated documentary shorts will not only include five compelling films\, but give you a sense of what’s happening in cinema right now – new techniques\, new ways of storytelling – and the nominees show you the top of the heap of young talent. This program is generally not rated\, though generally for aged 16+ mature viewers due to language\, content\, themes\, and length of program. All five nominees are from the US and all are in English. \nWe recognize that you may not be able to attend the entire program\, but if you must exit\, we ask that you do so between films. \nNominees:\nEdith + Eddie\n(Dirs. Laura Checkoway and Thomas Lee Wright)\nSynopsis:  Edith and Eddie\, ages 96 and 95\, are America’s oldest interracial newlyweds. Their love story is disrupted by a family feud that threatens to tear the couple apart.  (TRT: 29min) \nHeaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405\n(Dir. Frank Stiefel)\nSynopsis: This is a portrait of a brilliant 56 year old artist who is represented by one of Los Angeles’ top galleries. Her body of raw\, emotional work reveals a lifetime of depression and mental disorder. (TRT: 40) \nHeroin(e)\n(Dirs. Elaine McMillion Sheldon and Kerrin Sheldon)\nSynopsis: Once a bustling industrial town\, Huntington\, West Virginia has become the epicenter of America’s modern opioid epidemic\, with an overdose rate 10 times the national average. This flood of heroin now threatens this Appalachian city with a cycle of generational addiction\, lawlessness\, and poverty. (TRT: 39) \nKnife Skills\n(Dir. Thomas Lennon)\nSynopsis: What does it take to build a world-class French restaurant? What if the staff is almost entirely men and women just out of prison? Kate Davis and David Heilbroner)\nSynopsis: Featuring footage caught on a dashcam\, TRAFFIC STOP tells the story of Breaion King\, a 26-year-old African-American school teacher from Austin\, Texas whose routine traffic violation quickly escalated into a dramatic arrest at the hands of a white police officer.
