Morning Film Event at Orpheum Theater

Babette’s Feast – (dir. Gabriel Axel)

Atrium Lobby/Bar Open: 10:00AM
Theater Doors Open: 10:30AM
Film Program Begins: 11:00AM
TRT: 102 min
Rating: Rated G
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Languages: Danish, French, German, Italian, English (subtitles)

Film Summary: The Danish/French comedy/drama BABETTE’S FEAST is based on a story by Isak Dinesen, who is also the source of OUT OF AFRICA (1985). Stephane Audran plays Babette, a 19th century Parisian political refugee who seeks shelter in a rough Danish coastal town. Philippa (Bodil Kjer) and Martina (Birgitte Federspiel), the elderly daughters of the town’s long-dead minister, take Babette into their home. As revealed in flashback, Philippa and Martina were once beautiful young women (played by Hanne Stensgaard and Vibeke Hastrup), who’d forsaken their chances at romance and fame, taking hollow refuge in religion. Babette holds a secret that may very well allow the older ladies to have a second chance at life. Filmed entirely in Denmark, this is one of the great movies about food – but there are way too many surprises to reveal – and we do not want to spoil your appetite for this Academy Award, British Academy, and Cannes winning film! (Film summary credit to Hal Erickson.)

Lunch Break – 1:00PM to 2:00PM

We will clear and close the theater for the lunch hour! Concessions will remain open. Lunch spots nearby include The Market, The Source, Swamp Daddy’s, etc.

Matinee Film Event at Orpheum Theater

Cold Case Hammarskjöld – (dir. Mads Brügger)

Lobby Bar Open: 2:00PM
Theater Doors Open: 2PM
Film Program Begins: 2:30PM
TRT: 128 min
Rating: NR
Genre: Documentary
Languages: English, French, Swedish, Danish, Bemba (subtitles)

Film Summary: In 1961, United Nations secretary-general Dag Hammarskjöld’s plane mysteriously crashed, killing Hammarskjöld and most of the crew. With the case still unsolved 50-plus years later, Danish journalist, filmmaker, and provocateur Mads Brügger (The Red Chapel, The Ambassador) leads us down an investigative rabbit hole to unearth the truth. Scores of false starts, dead ends, and elusive interviews later, Brügger and his sidekick, Swedish Göran Björkdahl, begin to sniff out something more monumental than anything they’d initially imagined. In his signature agitprop style, Brügger becomes both filmmaker and subject, challenging the very nature of truth by “performing” the role of truth seeker. As Brügger uncovers a critical secret that could send shockwaves around the world, we realize that sometimes absurdity and irony are the emboldening ingredients needed to confront what’s truly sinister.

Dinner Break – 5PM to 6:30PM

We will clear and close the theater for the dinner hour! Concessions will remain open. Only True North ticket holders will proceed to Anne Zabel studio on site for smorgasbord.

The True North Smorgasbord Ticket must be purchased by November 2nd, 2019 in order to attend our on-site Scandinavian smorgasbord. The meal will be held in the Anne Zabel Studio Theater which is conveniently on site. Guests will be checked in at the entrance to the studio. No meal tickets will be sold the day of the event.

Evening Film Event at Orpheum Theater

One Last Deal – (dir. Klaus Härö)

Theater Doors Open: 6:30 PM
Film Program Begins: 7:00 PM
TRT: 95 min
Rating: PG13

Genre: Drama
Language: Finnish, Swedish (English Subtitles)

Film Summary: Cinema Falls has long championed the work of director Klaus Härö from his LETTERS TO FATHER JACOB to the Golden Globe nominee THE FENCER. We are pleased to present his latest film ONE LAST DEAL, produced by Kai Nordberg. This film played the Toronto International Film Festival and the Seattle Film Festival in 2019, and we’re thrilled to continue our tradition of supporting this winning film team. Film Summary: An elderly art dealer Olavi (72) is about to retire. A man who has always put business and art before everything–even his family–cannot imagine life without work. At an auction, an old painting catches his attention. Olavi suspects it is worth much more than its starting price, which is low because its authenticity hasn’t been confirmed. Olavi’s instincts kick in. He decides to make one last deal in order to earn some proper pension money. At the same time, Olavi’s daughter Lea (42)–whom he hasn’t seen for years–asks him to help her with his teenage grandson Otto (15). Together with Otto, Olavi starts to investigate the background of the painting, and what they discover ends up forcing the old dealer to face both the auction house and his own past mistakes.
